I design my own boats so my reality is that my boats will probably never perform like the boats that have gone through several prototypes and were designed and paddled by very knowledgeable people in the process.

Don't feel bad- you might be surprised how few commercial designs actually go through a prototype-test-modify-prototype cycle. For many it is: drawing-prototype-mold-production.
Probably one reason that the Mariner boats have a reputation as good hulls is that most of them went through a lot of cycles of prototyping.
