Re: Dont' worry, polyester is plenty strong

I'm not looking to pick a fight, either. My point is that the polyester fabrics commonly used in kayak skins have proved to be very durable and plenty strong enough for the application. Personally, I would gladly bump up slightly in weight, say from 9 oz. polyester to 10 oz. to gain additional strength, in order to have a fabric that was easy to sew, easy to shrink where necessary and that accepts any type of finish well. I just find that the hassles of using Nylon are not worth it.

While it's strictly anecdotal evidence, I have never put a hole in a polyester skin despite using my boats pretty hard. The toughest material I've even seen on a skin-on-frame boat was the 13 oz. polyester that Dyson used to sell. I've seen other paddlers bash it on rocks and paddle across oyster shells without any damage at all. I've done similar things with it on my own boat, with the rocks and barnacles up here. However, heavy fabrics like that are tough to sew, so you really have to want/need the extra durability to put yourself through the additional work of using them. I dropped down to fabrics in the 9-10 oz. range and they provide enough durability without the sewing difficulties.
