The longer the tape stays on, the harder the adhesive sticks. As soon as the epoxy gels you can take it off. I've never had it interfere with curing.

I hate 5 minute epoxy. It doesn't work right. The one exception is JB Weld's WoodWeld, but it's thickened epoxy, so is only good for filling gaps. In a pinch- I have used CA glue to seal end grain well. I'd try it on a kayak. In fact- I was thinking of putting it in an "emergency kit" for dings through the glass.
