Even construction grade SPF lumber could be used for strip building if you didn't mind working around some knots and the extra waste, and let the strips dry properly.

True. I've thought about doing just this lately.

A few weeks back we had a beautiful 2x10 SPF at the bridge project that I was tempted to grab. It was a real unicorn for New England and came from an ancient tree: 12 feet long, just a few tight pin knots in it and 20-30 growth rings per inch. It ended up being used as a bunk to form the new deck. I'd try to grab it in the spring after we pour the concrete deck but it'll be one among thousands of boards.
