Sorry to change the topic, but I noticed that both of your pictured boats have a bow day hatch within easy reach.

John:
Are you referring to the picture of the Seabird Expedition I posted?

I don't have any boats with 'glove box' compartments in the foredeck.
A friend has a new boat with one - the round screw-out cover allows access to a molded (looks like ABS plastic) box that's attached underdeck. The cover leaks, so he's not very enthusiastic about it, yet.
It's also in the same spot that the chart case occupies sometimes.

Some of the skilled builders who post here (Etienne Muller?) have built 'glove box' compartments - a search here or visit to some builders' websites may turn up details.

That seems like a better idea than the typical day hatch behind the cockpit found in some of the British kayaks (eg. NDK). I find those awkward, and turning around to fiddle with the hatch leaves me in a potentially unstable position.

Yes. I have some boats with 'day hatches' but I never access them when I'm on the water. There are a few advantages nevertheless:
-another paddler who is rafted up can dig into a day compartment for you and even if a wave slops water into it, it's not a large volume and most of yor flotation and gear will still be OK
-it's a good place to put water bladders when on a trip- it keeps the weight close to the cockpit and the center of the boat
-if you have gear (spare paddles) on the front deck, it's a 'pain' to move things to access the front compartment at a lunch stop. Sometimes the rear hatch may still be near the water's edge; so the day compartment is a handy place for lunch, thermos, jacket, etc..

I try to have everything I'm likely to need while paddling in my PFD or on deck, so a glove box doesn't appeal to me much.

The Sterling kayaks have a 'half-width' day compartment in their boats with a skeel behind the cockpit.
