Flip-down skeg

Hi there.

I was wondering if anyone had tried to build themselves a flip-down skeg, i.e., a non-turning rudder, but much like the common end-mounted rudders.

The advantages would be simpler (easier?) installation, firm footbraces at all times, and retention of the entire rear compartment for gear storage.

Disadvantages might be: more weight, possibility of mechanical failure, less effectiveness of the device due to its extreme rearward location.

Any thoughts on how 'deep' it should reach? I plan to make it adjustable as far as deploying, so that only as much as needed is used.

I'm now trying to figure between either a 'flip on top' design, or one that flips back into a recessed groove.
