Greenland paddle for beginner or not?

Well folks, I've read a hugh number of posts and haven't seen an answer to this one yet! I've decided to build a stitch and glue to start with for a few reasons, 1) I've never been in a kayak before and I can build one of high quality with a lower investment and higher resale value, if for some strange reason it doesn't appeal to me as much as I think it will. 2)I will definitely enjoy the building process and 3) they sure are nice looking (not as pretty as a stripper). To keep costs down I want to build my paddle(s) myself also. All that aside, will the greenland paddle be good to learn on? Will a paddle float work with a greenland paddle? Does anyone know of lessons (or is there a difference in instruction) for greenland style paddling? Does the yak I want to build have bearing on my decision? By the way I'm 5'4" 145lbs, want to load it with gear and have chosen (but not ordered yet) a Chesepeake 16. I can see the value of a good paddle and want to make a good decision here. Thanks. John
