If I am in a boat without a rudder and want to turn left without leaning, I lean forward(To lenghten the stroke on the right side) when I move my right hand forward and flic the paddle out with the right hip as it finishes the stroke. Sliding the paddle grip a few inches right will also help the boat turn left. When I paddle on the left the stroke is short. I know I should lean to turn but may I please confess, I cannot do a roll this year. (Confession of a nonroller.) Maybe if I work at it but thank God am still healthy to paddle fast on flatwater and maybe I will get time to get back to hip snaps and practice. It is still fun to paddle even if I can not do the second half of a roll. And you might find this hard to believe but I do get disoriented when upside down. Maybe all of us nonrollers could start a support group or perhaps a group hug would be in order. All the best!
