In my admittedly limited experience:

Paddles float - so a diving paddle is actually being pulled down by the roller rather than be forced down by some design feature. Contentrate more on sweeping out and pulling yourself to the surface with your offside knee, pushing the paddle to the surface rather than pulling on the paddle and the paddle will not dive.

Remember:

: "Geometry doesn't make paddles dive, people do"
: "Just say No to pulling on that paddle"
: "Paddles are for pushing (ropes are for pulling)"
: "If diving paddles were outlawed, only outlaws would have paddles"
