For the cold season, my favorite hand protection are the mittens made by Level Six. They have a super-grippy surface. No problems with paddle slippage even with my carbon Greenland paddles. Another option is to put surf board wax on your paddle shaft/blade roots.

One reason that paddle shoulders are popular with a GP is that they help retain a good grip even when the paddle is iced and while wearing gloves/mitts.
