The best 2 ways I can suggest are; bow-on paddling aggressively into the waves, or across your beam, bracing over the crest. If you're new to kayaking, bow-on is likely to be easier, at least mentally. If you keep paddling, you're more likely to stay on course if you turn into them.

The trick to taking waves over your beam is to lean into the wave slightly, and put your paddle blade on the back of the wave as the crest is upon you, basically a high brace over the wave as it comes across you. This method is best practiced in warm water if you've never done it before.
