here's my 10 cents' worth,

doing a leaning turn can get you capsized very quick if the wave hits you while you are still at it, since you will then be leaning the wrong way (away from wave) and also have your paddle on the wrong (away) side. So only do it if you know you have the time to finish it.

I personally prefer to take them on the beam, bracing low or high. But if at all favorable to my course, I always try to surf them! :)

Still, they are nasty if the boat passes real close, but as they tend to soften up pretty quickly, staying farther out of the lane helps.
