While participating in a cold water rescue practice session with my club, one of the other paddlers came up to my boat and said, "Wow! I didn't know you could roll with a paddle leash attached to your paddle. George Gronseth said it couldn't be done."
Of course, this is pure poppycock! You can do all sorts of rolls with a paddle leash attached I demonstrated a few to prove it. The leash I use (which retracts like a telephone cord) creates absolutely no interference with the mechanics of rolling.
I questioned the person to find out if George had said it wasn't advised to use a paddle leash in the surf or in whitewater (which is true) but he said, "No. George just told us we couldn't roll with a paddle leash attached."
Any thoughts on this? I've encountered a lot of misinformation in the world of sea kayaking, but this one was a surprise.
