On Sunday my paddling buddy Chris and I put on our new tuiliqs for the first time and headed out for some roll practice. Keep in mind that just 3 weeks ago this small inland lake still had some ice on it. I was the first to go since I had been teaching pool sessions all winter. What a treat to roll in 40 degree water and stay warm and dry. Chris is somewhat newer to rolling having only learned last winter and was not able to practice since last August. We agreed that if she missed the first two tries I'd bow rescue. Well she almost made it up on the first attempt but failed. I was waiting for her second try when I saw her hand come up, the signal for help, but before I could get to her she just slid both arms up on the bottom of the hull and lifted her head and performed the Petrussen Maneuver. Smiling she said it just felt like the natural thing to do. Greg if your out there she did read your article and says thanks.
Anyone who is interested in Greenland-style skills and paddles in cold water should think about getting a tuiliq. I know it will extend my practice time from 4 or 5 months to almost year round.
