I'll be gone for 2 1/2 weeks. Heading North for the big lakes in Canada after work today. Probably changing trip plan to head towards the Killarney/French River area of Georgian Bay first instead of to the Lake Superior coast west of Wawa. Water temperature at the Michipicoten Island offshore buoy hasn't hit 40 degrees yet. Inshore the temperature may be as much as 10 degrees higher on Lake Superior near Wawa because of a couple of good sized rivers pouring in warmer water. However, the Georgian Bay buoy has already cracked 60 degrees offshore.
It makes more sense to give the coast of Lake Superior another week to warm up a bit when we have really great conditions right now on Georgian Bay. That ought to also give us more wind/wave protection skirting in and out of the islands. So it's a safety thing. We still plan to paddle a week in each area. We may simply change the order in which we do it.
Will give a report on the Whetstone paddle and more when I return.
Wish us luck!
