I just began trying to learn to handroll last night, or "the hands roll" as Dutky says. I started with backward-leaning hand roll because I saw that that was the hand roll Hutchinson described in his book. Is this the best roll to start with? I had a couple of successful rolls last night (out of about 40 or 50 attempts, Ha!), but I had a hard time really driving my knee in that backward-leaning position. After rereading Dutky's descriptions I wonder if his two stroke forward-leaning roll wouldn't be easier and ultimately more practical (ie. a safer roll). Someone also described a "sweeping hand roll" where they moved their hands just like they would a regular roll. That seemed to have some merit, but isn't mentioned in either Dutky's or Hutchinson's books. Any thoughts?
