I have a general question for all of you wise ones out there. On Sunday, here in Chicago I was Kayaking with a heat index of over 100. On the Lake it was no doubt somewhat less than that. In total I kayaked about 8-10 miles on Sunday. While I was out on the water I came across some good friends who were out sailing. They hove to and I went aboard for lunch. It is normal for me to have one beer with lunch. As has been my practice I drink about two glasses of water or sport drink after the beer. Then I drink fluids as I paddle following lunch.
However, on Sunday I had three beers. I drank about two glasses of water and then had sport drink while kayaking. At the end of my kayaking day, I found myself clearly dehydrated, and I consumed large amounts of fluid at home. I began to get excessively sore and it really took about 12 hours into Monday before I felt normal.
Does any one know if there is a problem after using alcohol to then use a sport drink to try to keep hydrated? Is it possible that I made my situation worse and would have been better off drinking water? Does anyone have any info on this? Please don't tell me not to drink any beer while kayaking, that is not about to happen.
