shaft strength (snap)

Lat weekend I broke the shaft of my GrayOwl Tempest paddles doing a wet rentry with a sling (recent article in Sea Kayaker). What a sickening sound when the shaft snapped (right at the ferrule). Fortunately it was not an emergency situation and I was close to shore. However, it was embarrasing and expensive.

I have done this before successfully. Maybe I put too much weight on the sling instead of pulling myself onto the deck. Learning a roll would be a good idea I know, but any other advice and or recommendations? I wonder what Gray Owl will do-after all I only need half a paddle .
