Hypothermia help

Hi folks,

Im going to be doing some warmer weather kayaking into the cooler months, well as long as I can safely. With nothing but a pfd a sweater or jacket... you know, chilly weather wear, how cold can the water be before one crys out: "Ill die before I can swim to shore!!!!!"

Say your about a hundred yards offshore on a typical new england lake, or any body of water... how cold before the cold actually prevents you from saving your own life? Fiftey degrees? What numbers are we talking about. I couldnt roll if you promised me kayaking in Maui, never did a paddle float thingy either. Alas tho, Im as natural a swimmer as you can get. So Im not panic prone upon submersion. And I do not intend to be greater than 100 yards from anyshore. This isnt a way to be longterm, but Im a new kayak owner [ok the deck is still going on].

Any advice would be helpful.

Peter
