: One of my co-workers wants to go sea kyaking in a marsh on the Maine coast.
: He does not know how to swim, so my first instinct was to say NO. Is
: swimming a reasonable pre-requisite, or can he rely on his pfd?

I'm not much of a a swimmer either and I have taught a number of non-swimmers to be good kayakers over the years. Always wear floatation, dress for immesion, spend some time climbing in and out of kayaks, floating while hanging onto your boat, climbing onto overturned kayaks, learning to relax and trust your PFD and skills.

If your kayak is equipped with full length safety lines (as it should be) and you don't lose it, swimming and kayaking have nothing in common.
