I don't know about the rest of you folks... but the horror of yesterday's events had a profound effect upon me. One thing is certain in my mind... in those masses of building rubble and in the remains of those jetliners are some of our people... kayakers just like you and I. But for chance or the grace of God or some other intervention, it might well have been any one of us.
Please honor a special moment of silence for all the nameless kayakers we might have met on the water but for these horrific events. Remember too... all the other victims of this atrocity. Offer each his or her own private thanks that we remain alive to enjoy our sport while so many others have perished.
Our freedom has been attacked in the most heartless, dastardly way. And who moreso than we sea kayakers can understand just what this means... how valuable freedom is... how heinous the threat to it is?
Freedom is at the very core of our wonderful sport and lifestyle. For many, it is our "raison d'etre". Let us all offer a steel-hard resolve to support our leaders and their efforts to do battle with those who endanger and threaten our most cherished values. Regardless of my politics, I make this resolve right here... right now.
With Deepest Sorrow and Sympathy,
