Rolling with storm paddle

I have a new storm paddle, about 6" shorter than my other one. This new one is closer to what the length should be, and I like it better. It fits the deck better, and sliding strokes are 'natural' (at least as can be, I need more practice).

The paddle is too heavy, and sometime soon I'll duplicate it in spruce ( I used close-grained fir). Rolling with it last weekend, I had some trouble. I actually blew two rolls in a row, and almost ran out of breath. One of those 'this one counts' scenes. An extended sweep, lean-back (Pawlatta?) roll got me up, gasping. Is that the only roll to use? Is it the best? Does a too-heavy paddle make rolling harder? I'm hoping to get out again this weekend, and work at it some more. Anything specific I oughta try?

Better rolling through "levering"?

Fair enough, I like my "no-hipsnap" hand roll, too
No hipsnap--no lean back or forward?
How about a definition of "hipsnap"
