Strength Training for Kayaking?

Each year I take off up to SE Alaska for a 10 to 14 day kayaking trip with a few friends, and each year I wind up with sore, aching shoulders about three days into the trip, in spite of the fact that for months prior to a trip I spend a few days a week at a gym working out with a basic set of free-weight and machine exercises -- lat raises, presses, flyes, rowing, curls, pull-downs, the usual. I've expanded my repertoire to include exercises for my rotator cuffs (dislocated one shoulder long ago in a hole on the South Fork of the American River) and I'm careful to stretch each morning before I get in the boat. The paddling days can be long, without a lot of breaks, so I think my conditioning needs to be upgraded to prepare me for next summer's trip. I don't get a lot of opportunities to prepare for these trips outside of paddling on occasional weekends and working out in the gym -- a typical weekend warrior approach.

Can anyone give me some suggestions for a good stregth-building routine for sea kayaking? I assume that competitive paddlers have developed some good routines; I've just never been able to find one to whom I could pose this question.

Jim
