KBBS Update - Closing Down

I'm Shutting it down

Unfortunately the Kayak Building Bulletin Board is not what it used to be. As Brian has pointed out it got filled with spam. Traffic has been so light otherwise that I have decided it is not worth keeping the forum active. However, I will keep the data available. No new posts or comments will be allowed.

Yukon footboard and rudder

Submitted byRalph Merriman onMon, 10/04/2021 - 15:12

Hi All;

I am beginning the setup for one of Nick's Yukon racer/training kayaks.  This is the first single I have done that uses a rudder, and I am starting the hunt for a suitable rudder and footboard.

Has anyone out there built the Yukon who could tell me what worked for you?   It looks to me like one of the SmartTrack rudders (Race or Ski) might be the way to go for that piece,  but the footboard seems a bit trickier because of the shape of the deck.

I would appreciate any advice, especially if you had to make a footboard to fit your boat.

Salvaged western red cedar

750 to 1000 bd. ft. of old growth WRC.  2 x 4 x 18', 12' and 8' lengths.  This was decking material, nailed down, 2' on center.  Approximately 2" of clear wood between nail holes.   Random grain orientation with approximately 20 to 30 growth rings per inch.  Beautiful material once it is cleaned up.  This post is both an attempt to establish a value as well as potential buyer.

SOF: white polyurethane coating

Submitted bytraveler onSat, 03/27/2021 - 19:47

Just finished skinning my SOF kayak with 9 ounce nylon. Have Cory’s Goop polyurethane to apply and want to keep the skin white (on my last one I used rare earth powder pigments and it came out fine, but I do like the look of white better). Have been advised that tinting the goop with titanium dioxide powder will work. Does anyone have any experience with this or other ways to get a decent white tint for two part polyurethane? Am I asking for trouble with a white SOF in terms of longer-term discolouration? Thanks for any thoughts/advice/tips on this.

Trillium 21 - maiden voyage!

Submitted byBrad Grimm onSat, 11/07/2020 - 12:18

The Waters Dancing Trillium 21 that I started in May was finished this week.  We launched on Andrews Lake (elevation 10,744 feet) in the San Juan mountains not far from home in Durango.  She's fast and paddles beautifully.  We can't wait to take her to Vancouver Island for a week or two of kayak camping next summer.

First time flush hatches

Submitted byKenSpiegel onSat, 10/24/2020 - 21:39

This is my first try at flush hatches.  I understand that there is a spacer ring and a lip ring below it that the gasket will rest on.  I've seen some people use two 1/8th inch spacers followed by the lip ring that has the smaller inner diameter for the gasket to rest on.  I have plenty of 1/4" ply and was thinking of one ring of 1/4" for the spacer and one for the lip ring.
