I became unemployed by choice (kinda sorta) today...long story. Headed off to the government offices to do some paperwork, got that done, stopped at a restaurant to buy a delicious donair, left and headed to the park to eat it and read about Doug Mawson, Australian Antarctic explorer. I felt famished and wanted to devour the donair even before I got to the park. Got to the park, parked my car and while I was parking the car, saw a very tired, withdrawn, thin homeless man, carrying empty plastic bags, slowly making his way to a park bench to rest. I thought of my current situation, unemployed, yes, but driving a very nice car, enjoying kayaking when I like, not constantly hungry...I did the one thing that my heart always asks me to do...I grabbed my awesome smelling, still warm donair, walked over to the guy, and offered it to him. He was very grateful. I was feeling very hungry but I could easily fix that another time. I asked him if he was homeless, he said yes, his raggedy clothing attested to that. I dug into my pocket and pulled out a $20 bill, gave it to him...more graciousness from him. He never looked up at me. I gave him a pat on the shoulder and asked him to take care.
From the park I left to do other chores then went home to work on the VJ, the kayak I am repairing. I have much food in the house...I never bothered to eat. I cracked open a beer and got on to my kayak repair work. My point here is simple...don't wait for the homeless to ask for help...they generally won't. Step up and offer something, even simple conversation...it's humanising and always welcome...then go paddle someplace beautiful.

Time flies
Hey Rob,
I'm pleased to see your posts again, I saw one of your earlier posts, and the picture with the grey beard... wow. has it really been that long?
Wanted to say hi, and keep up the good work, even if you are not working.
I managed to break my ankle well and good just after Christmas. tried kayaking a week or so ago... did not like that at all. But maybe a couple more months, and I can make it up and we can hit the water again, or maybe I'll just have to build a larger kayak so my foot does not need to extend forward to fit.
If we don't get a chance to meet up this summer, then take good care of yourself,
Myrl.
Minniwanka
Let's do Minniwanka again, this time when it's not 0 C. Ankle first to care for, Myrl. It's good to be back at the Forum, something Caesar would never say. ?
