i am new to paddling and boat building.  currently building 2 sof canoes for the wife and i.  i run across from time to time videos from "mess abouts" or other gatherings where people gather to show the boats they have built and paddle around ect with other boat builders.  looking for events in the midwest region, although if there was a "can't miss" "super bowl"  event i would consider traveling farther.  any help or recommendations would be appreciated.  again brand new, so im sure i am not using the right terms.

Painting a kayak

This is my Night Heron. I painted it with metallic auto paint bombs, gold leaf paint, and metal flake set in epoxy for the leaf patterns. I used electrical tape to outline the stenciled patterns and yes, this took a lot of time but the final effect was worth it. The auto paint art was clear coated to excellent effect while everything else was coated with epoxy to cover then brushed with Spar Varnish, again to excellent effect. The only negative I found by using auto paint is that it chips off when impacted the wrong way.

Finish over glass

Hi all,

I'm now in a point where final sanding is more or less done and in some places I have reached glass fibers too (edges of overlaps and reinforcement patches). Should I seal these areas with epoxy before applying varnish? I'm worried, that the glass matrix will be visible under the varnish unless it isn't surrounded with epoxy. This is my first boat to build and the finish will be far from perfect anyway. So if the effect is minuscule, then it won't really matter. I'm using a natural oil based boat varnish (Le Tonkinois).

little auk design

Hi All

I'm hoping to build my first kayak soon and I have chosen a Little Auk for my introductory project (hopefully with a curved top deck if I can work out how to plot and make the forms !). I can't afford  plans so I'm working it out as I go. Is building the smaller version of the Great Auk just a matter of shortening the form spacings or is there more to it than that ? Any advice much appreciated...I have a feeling that I might become a regular visitor to this forum !!!
