I had previously posted about bugs in my seal coat, but after gentle scraping and laying out and wetting the fiberglass, the bug spots areas were not too much of a problem. However, on my first fill coat, I was applying an abrasion football patch, and ran into problems.  I had cut the fiberglass for the patch carefully on the bias and placed it right to the chines.  When  I started putting the epoxy on, in spite of being gentle,  the edges frayed and unraveled and in some cases snarled.

One pack polyurethane over epoxy

I built a stitch and glue kayak 10 years ago using a non blushing epoxy and covered the epoxy with an expensive water based cross linked polyurethane designed to be applied over epoxy and protect it from UV damage.  After 10 years without maintenance the deck has some damage to the epoxy.  I have sanded the deck and recoated it with epoxy.  As there are now some one pack polyurethanes with very good UV resistant ingredients at a third of the price of the two pack products, I though that this time I would apply a one pack polyurethane over the epoxy.  My problem is that the one pack products

Bugs in seal coat

Hi, all.  I’m a newbie building my first stripper (Petrel Play) down here in Louisiana, with only books, web, and videos for support.  I put my slow hardening seal coat on my hull exterior last night, and planned to glass today.  Overnight...about a dozen little critters are now stuck in the epoxy surface as bumps.  I had seal coated at dusk inside my shop, hoping the falling temps would help prevent bubbles from off-gassing, but didn’t anticipate bugs being attracted to the light (I had the door cracked open for my air mover to exhaust).  Most are pretty tiny.

Adding colour to kayak during build - advice please

Submitted byhullb onFri, 08/10/2018 - 15:03

Having done a couple of woodstrip builds, for my next build wondered about making an all black sea kayak. Not sure yet if it will be cedar strip or S and G.

Anyone any advice on adding opaque colour to wooden kayaks. Staining the wood would not be sufficiently opaque. Do I add colour to all the resin layers, just the fill coats, the last varnish coats or simply paint on top?

Best Kayak? Help Needed

Hi there

I am looking for a bit of wisdom...

I have a cobra expedition, which i find is a little too long for my needs and is not as agile as id like,

I am looking for something thin lightweight, fast and agile and after a lot of research have come up with the following SOTs.

Triumph 13 (not as thin as id like but by all accounts seems like a good choice)

RTM Tempo Angler (a little more than id like to spend but reviews are good)

Kayak trailer

I am in the process of converting an old boat trailer into a 4 place kayak trailer. The frame is 2.5" square tubing with two 2.5" square vertical posts 54" high and 80" apart with two 48" storage boxes slightly recessed on each side of center and just ahead of the axel. This has been a part time project all summer and from day one I did not know how I was going to hang the kayaks or secure them down. I have reached the point I have to make a decision and I have - - - - nothing :((

Advice seriously needed.

I'm 77.  Never paddled.  Physically challenged.  Want to build a double sea kayak.  The obvious choice is Stitch & Glue.  And here comes trouble.

I am in Thailand.  Forget about red cedar, CVG, marine grade plywood, Western System Epoxy etc.   I know, for you guys living in US it is a matter of choosing the nearest reliable supplier...  I have honestly tried...  The best thing I can buy here is:
