I wanted to amplify Nick's point. A painter's "dust" mask will only protect you from large particles, like sanding particles or 'glass fibers. Even fine dusts will penetrate. Gases (i.e. fumes, vapors) are not filtered in the least.

Respirators remove organic vapors and exclude particles as well. Even cheap ones are OK as long as you replace the cartridges periodically (they can only absorb so many gas molecules.)

Test your respirator for a tight fit by wearing it into the bathroom when your Uncle Horace comes out after Christmas dinner. (You can demonstrate the worthlessness of a dust mask in the same manner.)
