When you build cupboards with good veneer plywood, there is a finish tape for covering the edges. It is very thin wood with a layer of heat sensitive glue that is ironed on. You can get birch, oak, etc.

This would make a nice trim line between paint and wood and once glued down just varnish over it with the rest of your deck. Randy
