I forgot to add another great tool for scraping is a finishing plane from Home Depot that is no longer than 3" and 1" wide. This plane is only $6. The idea is to curve the sole of the plane using a belt sander and also curve the plane blade as well. Use a grinder with a fine wheel to curve the blade and create the correct bevel and keep the blade cool by going slow and using water. It helps to have sharpening adds to maintain the bevel angle and to hone a fine edge later with what ever method you prefer (water stones, diamond stones, oil stones, etc). There is a small learning curve (no pun intended) to learn how to sharpen edges effectively. I strongly suggest getting your hands on some wood working books that cover sharpening. I remember when I first started my beginnings in wood working and wondered why my chisels were not working properly. I had just bought new chisels and assumed they were sold already sharpened!
