I have the same problem with my Arctic Tern, but I have size 10 feet. I believe the problem is in the seat and not the foot position. The problem occurs from inadequate thigh support and having to hold you legs up. I used a boat with a better seat and less foot room, and did not have this problem. I find the Thermarest seat is lacking for anything more than a 45 minute paddle.
I am going to try a custom seat built out of 3" minicell foam. There are directions in Nick's book for building one.
