Remember that stain only penetrates the outer layers of wood. If you have to sand or plane the wood after it is stained, you may cause the coloration to be removed unevenly. I had the problem after staining the combing pieces of the Osprey I am building.

Test this before you do it on a boat! Check the stain you are using and see if you can mask around the area you want to stain. If you can, then mask and stain the area after your final sanding.

It might be a better idea (and easier) to use a diffent color wood for accent.
