I used a similar method except instead of foam weatherstrip i used a refrigerator door seal which is magnetic for a very water tight fit. On the underside of the hatch i attached a thin piece of stainless steel to complete the seal. A small knob was attached to the hatch for easier removal. recycle seals off of old refrigerators at the local landfill. The selection there is great and if you keep lookin you can find a nice thin seal. Mine came off an old dormatory type.
