Mark,
I installed a Guzzler 400S in my Chesepeake 18 about 4 inches behind the forward bulkhead. I cut a crab pot bouy ($8-9) to the right length, carved little notches for the pump legs, and used long stainless steel screws, fender washers, and self locking nuts to secure the whole mess to the bulkhead. The bouy just fills the space between the screws and transfers the force on the pump to a large area of the bulkhead. I didn't stiffen the bulkhead at all.
Jack Martin, who convinced me I needed a foot pump, moved his forward bulkhead back about 6 inches for a direct mount and surrounded the pump with about 3-inches of foam. Very clean looking and no foot trap area!
Happy Boatbuilding,
John
