I also extended my cheek plates from the hull to the deck and filleted and glassed them in on top and bottom. Theoretically this might produce a stiff spot in the hull that wouldn't flex if I were to slide over a rock. In practice, it doesn't seem to effect it at all and my cheeks are happy on the plates.

I have had cheekier family members paddle the kayak with no complaints as well!
