if you are just trying to save some $$$ (and, with few exceptions - who isn't), and are not really into building, you should probably save your pennies and buy a boat. I'm a first time builder and I'm hooked. Its not to say its all fun and games, but it is very rewarding if you like working with your hands. If you build there are a lot of options, stitch and glue (like my Chessie 16), stripper and skin-on-frame, to name the popular ones. I plan on building at least one of each type, including boats of my own design.

As to performance comparisons: I've only had the Chessie 16 out three times but it is as fast as my friend's Sea Lion and faster than another friend's Necky Looksha. PLus, it handles better than either boat because it is hard chined. Oh yeah, of course from an appearance stand-point it blows those roto-molded jobs away.

As for beautiful "store bought" boats I'd like to put a vote in for the Current Designs Solstice; just for comparison with the Nordkapp.
