I have paddled many types of commercial kayaks, fiberglass and plastic, and have had great experiences in all of them. I have recently built a CLC North Bay and a S&G of my own design, and I'm having great experiences with these boats. It took me a number of though, to develop my skills to the point where I could begin to appreciate the different types and designs of kayaks available. I find, however, that I am getting more satisfaction out of paddling a boat I have built. I'm even building another one, but I still own a commercially build kayak.

I suggest that you start with a boat that is within your budget, and go paddling. There is always new something to learn and enjoy when one paddles a kayak. Kayaking opened up a whole new world of people, fun , and adventure to me.
