A strip built kayak probably costs more. But, since it is made up of many, many small parts you can probably spread the expense over a longer time.
Also, if you are a perfectionist then the whole strip building process will amuse you for hours on end and provide limitless chances to be creative and be as exact as you like in fitting each strip.
Relatively speaking, the book (even if you don't build one of his designs) was by far the cheapest way to understand and save money in the long run.
