Varnish and/ or epoxy can cause blisters. The feel of real wood is MUCH nicer.

Unless you have glued things up with NON waterproof glue, you do not need to finish at all.

I have 3 canoe paddles, all epoxied and varnished, 2 kayak paddles 1 epoxied and varnished, the 2nd has nothing on it. We did not have time to 'finish' it. That unfinished paddle is easily the one most used. Anyone of us, given a choice, will take the unfinished paddle.
