You might want to use an internet search engine to find links to the many concrete canoe building sites. These boats are usually built by students in college-level engineering classes, and grudge races between schools are common. It seems to be a requirement that the victor also create a website to memorialize the defeat of their foes.
Common current rules require these boats to be able to float even if completely swamped. As a result, many have decked-over compartments, sealed compartments, and cockpits -- and thus are styled after popular kayaks.
The decked areas are not only structurally strong, they reduce the need for high sides to keep out waves. On a concrete boat that would be a lot of added weight.
While these craft are not light, they can be quite cheap, and fast to construct. (Rapid construction is practically guaranteed since these are built by college students who put off doing the work until the night before)
Frequently you will see the term ferro-concrete. This means the boat is basically built of a mesh of iron or steel reinforcing wire which is plastered over with concrete. You can use the same forms for building one of these as you would use for a strip built kayak. put them on a strongback, cover with wire mesh ( several layers of woven fencing material like `chicken wire`) and lay on a coat of concrete with a trowel, forcing it through the mesh. Scrape off the excess on the inside, and smooth it out.
When the boat is done, keep it wet for a week so the concrete can cure. A simple way to do this is to take it to the nearest lake and sink it. Later you can haul it out, let it dry, paint it (don't even think of sanding it first) and re launch it.
This is one kayak that wont flinch if you try to crack a bottle of champagne over the bow at the relaunch.
Best of luck with your project.
