Dean, some where in this board is mention of a kayak building book that deals entirely in the home building of fiberglass whitewater boats. The author of the book used the data from someones masters thesis I think. It's about 15 yrs old, but deals with fiberglass,s-glass,nylon,kevlar,polyester laminates with graphs depicting force/deflection/time? or something to that effect. The books somewhere under a pile of laundry here, but I know it's out there. The interesting thing I got out of it was the difference between initiation energy, and propogation energy. The first term corresponding to force required to cause a fracture, propogation energy corresponding to forces required to cause complete failure of laminate. I know I'm mixing force and energy here. For example a laminate with high initiation energy but low propogation energy would be all fiberglass, a laminate with low initiation energy but high propogation energy would be all nylon or polyester.
