Hi kent, don't know what you strippers use as a recess spacer,but on the s&g kayaks I've made i've use 3or 4mm plywood. Done it both ways , with and without spacer, doesn't seem to affect water tightness. What does seem to matter is how well the top of the spacer corresponds to the underside of the hatch. Makes sense to use strips and glass.
