Redwood is GREAT lightweight wood for the core of your boat. Since you're in San Diego, I assume you'll probably paddle in salt water. Be sure to encapsulate the wood in epoxy and any "ding" you get while paddling should be repaired when you get back to land. My Coastal doesn't have much damage, but even small amounts of saltwater turns the redwood jet black under the epoxy. You won't be able easily remove this discolored area.
