I think the US Navy also uses them to tow behind attack and nuc. submarines so they can have an additional sonar "ear" to listen to whatever is behind the propeller; since the prop makes it very hard to hear directly behind you.

Of course, I think I learned this in a Tom Clancy novel, but this information is worth every penny you paid for it!
