Your home made planer tool sounds like the big commercial planer we had in the lab. Cutting drum on top, controlled feed on the bottom.

What about this as a tool, a table saw. Or even a circular saw bolted down upside down. That's what I did on mine. Used the ever handy B&D workmate table, held my circular saw in it upside down, squared it up with the surface, clamped a rip fence in position, and two feather boards, one right at the blade, the other at the front of the rip fence. With a little practice I was able to rip a 13' board into nice 1/4" strips this way. By going slow and steady, the finish on them was quite good.
