I used butt joints with a 4mm 3 inch Okoume backing plate on my Sea Spirit. I have used scarf joints in the past. For me, the butt joints were easier to make. You can see them at my web page http://pages.cthome.net/bobbycurtis/ssconstruction.htm#Construction
I like your idea of distributed deckbeams.
