Klepper has been using Baltic birch plywood in the construction of the frames for their kayaks for quite some time. Check their website at: www.klepper.com/features.htm
What makes you think that birch is NOT '' The good stuff''? It seems to have worked for them for the past 50 years, so I suppose it should work for you for an occasional long weekend.
