Can't help you with the mold release. However I just installed a skeg using a removable fin system that is found on my surfboards. The fin is not retractable but it is easily removable with an allen (sp) key when out of water. I found installing the two plugs to be quite easy, and I reinforced on the inside with some fibreglasss cloth. I stuck a surfboard fin on the kayak and I'm sure it would work, however, at some point I will make a cedar strip fin to make the boat look pretty. I also like the idea of a "weak" wooden skeg because if I hit something I would rather the fin break than pushing it into the hull. I've seen quite a few times the damage fins do to the bottom of surfboards when they connect with rocks - not a pretty site - the bottom of surfboards are a lot weaker than the hull of a strip-built kayak, but I still would like to know that the skeg will break before the hull does. find the web page for the FCS fin system below.
