I dont use a guard either and have dodged several kickbacks over the years. I recently made a featherboard like the one in Nick's book (pg. 86) from a piece of 1/2" plywood. It completely covers the blade while cutting strips and prevents kickback. It is as good or better than a guard. It is easy to make, holds the board down and prevents kickback. Anyone cutting strips should make one.
