Router Bits (budget?)

I was wondering if anyone has tried using round nose (core box), and bull nose bits instead of the standard flute (cove) & bead. I found that these also have the 1/4" diameter carbide tips, but are not specialty bits (read overpriced boatbuilding), so their cost is around $10 - $14 each.

Am I wrong in thinking that these would work just as well as the specialty bits? I know it is not a huge savings, but they are from the same manufacturers as the more expensive specialty bits, so I would assume that they are good quality.

If I am wrong please set me straight.

If I am right, are we all being taken by buying the more expensive bits?

Mike
